Group Term Life Insurance Claim Status

Once you file a death claim, you can check the status of the claim for your group term life insurance on the insurer’s website. Claim status will show the status like under process or accepted or pending. Insurers use different phrases to convey the status. 

According to IRDAI, death claims are to be settled within 30 days of filing if the insurer doesn’t have to investigate the death. If there's any investigation required, then the claim has to be settled within 6 months.

What are the documents required for filing a death claim?

The following are the common documents needed to file a claim in group term life insurance. However, it is essential to contact your insurer and get the details of the documents required as it differs based on the nature of the death - natural, unnatural, natural disasters.

  • Death certificate of the insured
  • Post-mortem report (unnatural)
  • Identity proof of the beneficiary
  • Original policy documents
  • Hospital records, discharge form and medical certificate 
  • Cremation certificate and employer certificate
  • Police FIR (Unnatural)

Claim settlement process for group term life insurance 

The claim settlement process of any term life insurance is pretty much the same.

  1. Nominee files the claim with all the required documents within 90 days from the date of death of the insured
  2. The insurer assesses and verifies the claim and documents
  3. The insurer settles the claim by accepting or rejecting based on the previous step. When accepted, the nominee/nominees receive the death benefit. Sometimes, in group term life insurance, the insurer might settle the death benefit to the employer and then the employer can give it to the nominee.
